How to Keep Your Teeth/Preface

A guide by Dr. Isaac Sun

Why I wrote this.

I have watched patients lose teeth that did not need to come out. Not because of bad luck or genetics — but because of decisions made without enough information, or habits that were never connected to consequences. It happens more than it should. And it is preventable more often than most people realize.

Dentistry often fails to explain itself. You are told what needs to be done, and you are asked to say yes. The reasoning stays in the chart. The logic behind the recommendation — why this treatment, why now, what happens if you wait — rarely makes it into the conversation. This guide is an attempt to put that reasoning back in your hands.

The title is not metaphorical. Keep Your Teeth means keep your actual teeth. The ones you have now. The ones that, with the right information, can stay with you for decades longer than most people expect. Not through heroic intervention or expensive treatment — but through understanding what causes loss and acting on that understanding before it becomes urgent.

This is not a guide about perfect dental hygiene or achieving a flawless mouth. It is a guide about patterns: the patterns that lead to tooth loss, the patterns that prevent it, and the decisions — small and large — that determine which direction you are heading. I wrote it for the patient who wants to understand what is actually happening, not just be told what to do about it.
