New patient guide · Fountain Valley, CA

What to expect at your first appointment.

Your first visit at KYT Dental Services takes about 60–90 minutes. The goal is a clear understanding of what’s going on with your teeth — not a sales pitch for treatment. We’ll walk through everything together at your pace.

Before your visit
A few things to bring — and one to expect.

When you book, we send a short intake form by email so you can fill it out at home. Most patients finish it in 5 minutes.

Bring three things: your photo ID, your dental insurance card if you have PPO coverage, and a list of any medications you’re taking. If you have X-rays or records from a previous dentist, bring those too — or have them sent over before your visit.

And expect a real person to call back. We confirm every new appointment by phone before it’s scheduled, so the time slot you see online is a request, not a hard booking.

Your first visit, step by step
About 60–90 minutes. Calm, complete, no surprises.
Step 1
Welcome and intake review
We review your intake form together and ask about anything that’s been bothering you — pain, sensitivity, changes you’ve noticed, or just general concerns. This is where we listen before we look.
Step 2
Comprehensive exam
We check your teeth, gums, bite, and the structures that support them. We take X-rays when needed — typically a full set for new patients, unless you have recent ones from another dentist. We screen for oral cancer, gum disease, decay, and structural risk.
Step 3
Cleaning, when appropriate
If your gums are healthy and a routine cleaning fits, we do it at the same visit. If we find significant gum inflammation or buildup, we may recommend a deeper cleaning at a follow-up so it can be done well — not rushed.
Step 4
Findings conversation
We sit down and walk through what we found, what it means, and what your options are. We use plain English. We use pictures. If something needs treatment, we’ll tell you why — and what would happen if you waited.
Step 5
Plan and estimate
Before you leave, you have a written treatment plan and a clear cost estimate including your PPO coverage. You don’t need to commit to anything that day. We schedule a follow-up only when you’re ready.
If you haven’t been to a dentist in a while
That’s the most common first visit we see.

A lot of our new patients haven’t had a dental visit in two, five, sometimes ten years. We’re built for it. The first visit is calm, no judgment, and unrushed. We meet you where you are and figure out what makes sense from here — together.

Common questions
What new patients ask before booking.
How long does the first dental appointment take?
Plan for about 60–90 minutes. That includes intake, exam, X-rays if needed, a cleaning when appropriate, and a clear conversation about what we found. If anything urgent comes up, we'll talk through it before you leave.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Three things: your photo ID, your dental insurance card (if you have PPO coverage), and a list of any medications you're taking. If you have records or X-rays from a previous dentist, bring those too — or have them sent over before your visit.
Will you do treatment at the first visit?
Usually no. The first visit is for evaluation and conversation. We'll only treat at the first visit if something is urgent (active pain or infection). Otherwise we'll lay out the plan, give you the cost estimate, and schedule treatment for a follow-up — so you have time to decide without pressure.
Do I need to fill out paperwork before I arrive?
We'll send you a short intake form by email after you book. Filling it out beforehand saves time at the office. If you'd rather complete it in person, that's fine too — arrive 15 minutes early.
What if I'm anxious about going to the dentist?
Tell us up front. Many of our patients haven't been to a dentist in years, and we're built around calm, unrushed visits. We'll explain everything before we do it, take breaks if you need them, and never push you toward treatment you're not ready for.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. Bring a partner, friend, or family member if it helps you feel more comfortable. They can be in the consultation conversation with you. For the actual exam, the room is small but they're welcome to wait nearby.
How does insurance work at the first visit?
If you have PPO coverage, we verify your benefits before your visit and explain what's covered. The first appointment (exam, X-rays, cleaning when appropriate) is usually well-covered. We'll be clear about any out-of-pocket portion before treatment.
What happens after the first visit?
You'll leave with a clear understanding of what we found, a treatment plan if anything needs to be done, a written estimate that includes your insurance coverage, and a recommended next step. If everything is healthy, we'll just schedule your next routine visit.
When you’re ready
Pick a time window. We’ll confirm the rest.

You don’t need to know what’s wrong. You don’t need to commit to anything. The first visit is for figuring it out together.
