Blood thinners

Eliquis and your teeth

Generic name: Apixaban · Class: Direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC)

Eliquis is a direct oral anticoagulant used to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation and to treat or prevent DVT and pulmonary embolism.

Eliquis increases bleeding during and after dental procedures, but the management is different from warfarin. There is no equivalent of an INR test, the drug clears the body in a predictable timeframe, and dose timing around procedures is the main lever. Most routine dental work, including most extractions, can be done without stopping the medication.
