Doxycycline and your teeth

Generic name: Doxycycline · Class: Tetracycline antibiotic

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used for acne, rosacea, respiratory infections, and tick-borne illness.

Doxycycline disrupts the normal bacterial balance in the mouth and gut, raising the risk of oral thrush during and shortly after treatment. In young patients (under 8), tetracyclines also cause permanent gray-brown tooth staining, which is why they are contraindicated in children. Adults do not stain new teeth from doxycycline.
