Opioid pain medications
Hydrocodone and your teeth
Generic name: Hydrocodone · Class: Mu-opioid agonist
Hydrocodone is one of the most prescribed opioid analgesics in the US, often combined with acetaminophen for moderate to severe pain.
Hydrocodone is the opioid most commonly prescribed after dental procedures. Short-term use after surgery has minimal dental consequence. Long-term use, often in chronic pain patients, causes substantial dry mouth and is strongly associated with elevated cavity rates, especially in the smooth surfaces of teeth that saliva normally protects.
