Opioid pain medications

Tramadol and your teeth

Generic name: Tramadol · Class: Atypical opioid analgesic (mu-opioid agonist + SNRI)

Tramadol is an atypical opioid used for moderate pain, with both mu-opioid and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor activity.

Tramadol commonly causes dry mouth and is sometimes prescribed after dental procedures. The dual mechanism (opioid plus SNRI activity) produces more dry mouth than many other opioids of similar strength. Long-term use, common in chronic pain patients, raises cavity risk meaningfully.
