Steroids and inflammation
Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) and your teeth
Generic name: Hydroxychloroquine · Class: Antimalarial / DMARD
Hydroxychloroquine is used for malaria, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune conditions.
Hydroxychloroquine is a well-known cause of oral lichenoid reactions, which present as white lacy patches, redness, or ulcers in the mouth. It can also cause blue-gray pigmentation of the palate and gums in rare cases with long-term use. Patients on Plaquenil should have any new oral lesions evaluated rather than assumed to be ordinary inflammation.
