Jardiance and your teeth
Generic name: Empagliflozin · Class: SGLT-2 inhibitor
Jardiance is an SGLT-2 inhibitor used for type 2 diabetes and heart failure, working by causing the kidneys to excrete excess glucose in the urine.
Jardiance can contribute to dry mouth through its diuretic effect: increased urination, slight dehydration, and shifts in fluid balance. The medication is also associated with urogenital fungal infections, but oral thrush risk is not meaningfully elevated. Patients on Jardiance who have surgery should mention the medication; it is sometimes held briefly to reduce ketoacidosis risk.
