Levodopa/Carbidopa (Sinemet) and your teeth

Generic name: Levodopa-Carbidopa · Class: Dopamine precursor (anti-Parkinson's)

Levodopa is the most effective medication for Parkinson's disease, converted to dopamine in the brain to replace what the disease destroys.

Parkinson's patients on levodopa face a layered dental picture: the medication itself can cause dry mouth and altered taste, while the disease causes tremor, swallowing difficulty, and reduced dexterity that affect both oral hygiene and dental procedures. Drooling is also common (paradoxically, despite reduced saliva, because of impaired swallowing). Each piece needs its own approach.
