Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) and your teeth
Methylphenidate is the most commonly prescribed ADHD medication in children, available as immediate-release (Ritalin), extended-release (Concerta), and other formulations.
Methylphenidate causes dry mouth and teeth grinding through the same stimulant mechanisms as Adderall and Vyvanse. Because it is so frequently prescribed to children and adolescents whose teeth are still developing or recently finished forming, the cumulative cavity and wear risk over the years of treatment is particularly important to recognize. Parents are often not warned about the dental side effects when starting these medications.
We review every patient’s medications at every visit and adjust treatment planning when it matters. If you are starting a new medication or have a procedure coming up, mention it and we’ll walk through what to expect.
