Olanzapine (Zyprexa) and your teeth

Generic name: Olanzapine · Class: Atypical antipsychotic

Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic used for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and as an adjunct in major depression.

Olanzapine has strong anticholinergic effects that significantly reduce saliva flow. The combination of substantial weight gain (common with olanzapine), metabolic syndrome, and dry mouth raises both cavity risk and the practical difficulty of dental work (impressions, prosthetic fit). Tardive dyskinesia from long-term use can also affect jaw and tongue movements.
